How to Print MICR Checks
- 1). Purchase blank check stock. Verify with your bank regarding the acceptable variety of blank check stock. Find out which are the security features your bank prescribes. Search for information on manufacturers that supply blank check stock with all the fraud-proof features you're looking for. Compare quality and prices, and place an order with the manufacturer you consider suitable.
- 2). Purchase MICR fonts. Search for companies that supply MICR fonts. Study the details of the fonts supplied by all of them. Choose the company that has fonts adhering to the ANSI standard X9.27-1995 and ANS X9.7-1990. This is critical because fonts that don't meet these standards are not read correctly. As a result, there's a lot of misinterpretation of data, which can lead to your bank rejecting checks printed with such fonts.
- 3). Purchase a magnetic toner cartridge. MICR check printing needs a magnetic toner cartridge. These cartridges are generally not available with usual laser printer makers. Locate companies that make such cartridges and purchase the right one.
- 4). Purchase a laser printer. Find companies that sell laser printers. Select and purchase the printer that matches your magnetic toner cartridges.
- 5). Set up the printing system. Load the MICR fonts onto your computer. Fit the laser printer with the magnetic toner cartridge and connect it to the system. Load the blank check stock onto the printer tray. Give the print command from your word processing or accounting software to take a sample print. Submit this sample check to your bank for approval. Following the approval, begin printing your own MICR checks.
