How to Become a Dentist in Michigan
- 1). Complete a bachelor’s degree program in pre-medicine or in a scientific discipline. To gain admission into a Doctor of Dental Surgery program, students must study a core science curriculum at the undergraduate level. Courses may include organic chemistry, biology, inorganic chemistry, physics, microbiology, and biochemistry. Undergraduate students should also seek out any dental-related volunteer opportunities. Students must keep their grade point average above a 3.5 on a 4.0 scale, as the dental school admission process is very competitive.
- 2). Take the Dental Admissions Test (DAT) administered by the American Dental Association (ADA). The DAT tests a student's potential for succeeding at dental school. It tests a student's understanding of scientific principles, general academic abilities and perceptual abilities. Prospective dental school students should visit the ADA website to review test procedures, including preparation and registration for the exam.
- 3). Get accepted into and graduate from a dental program with a DDS degree. Each dental program has its own admission criteria and requirements. The typical program takes four years to complete. Students can expect to take a variety of courses and labs, in addition to required clinical practice under the supervision of a dentist.
- 4). Pass the National Dental Examination administered by the ADA. This exam assists the Michigan Dental Board in determining eligibility for licensure. The National Dental Examination is extensive in its scope and consists of two parts. The ADA recommends applicants review the guidebooks it provides online to understand the structure and content of the test and how to register for it.
- 5). Pass the Regional Dental Examination administered by the Northeast Regional Board of Dental Examiners (NERB). As of 2010, the Michigan Dental Board requires this exam in addition to the national exam. The exam consists of five parts, measuring knowledge and skill in restoration, periodontics, prosthodontics, endodontics and diagnostic skills. Registration for the exam takes place online and candidates will find comprehensive presentations of each exam on the NERB website.
- 6). Gain licensure in Michigan. Once an applicant meets all requirements, she may apply for a license to practice dentistry. Applicants must pass a background check as part of the application process.
