Can I Prune a Fig Tree After the Fruit Has Finished?
- The fig prefers dry, temperate climates resembling that of the Mediterranean basin. It accepts most soil types if deep and well-drained. Unlike many fruit trees, the fig produces well without pruning.
- Commercial fig producers winter-cut the crowns of newly planted figs to facilitate the harvest. They do not prune older trees. Since the mature fig bears its main crop on last year's terminals, heavy winter pruning eliminates the following year's crop.
- Fig trees bear two crops: the breba crop in early spring and the main crop in the fall. If you need to cut back your mature tree, California Rare Fruit Growers advises pruning immediately after the main crop is harvested.
