What to Do After I Have Been Hacked on "World of Warcraft"?
- The first and most important thing you need to do after being hacked is to learn how the attacker got access. Most commonly, they were able to plant a keylogger on your system, usually through an exploit in your Web browser. A keylogger is a program that records everything you type on your keyboard. Run spyware and virus scanners until you locate the offending malware and delete it to prevent further access to your accounts. Once you have removed the keylogger, you should also change all your passwords, as the hacker may have information regarding your email and financial accounts as well.
- If you remember the secret question and answer you created when you opened your World of Warcraft account, you can easily regain access online. Select the "Can't log in" option from the Battle.net login menu and enter your information. Once you have verified that you are the correct owner of the account, you can regain control of it, restore any information the hacker might have changed and log back into the game.
- Once you are back in the game, open a GM ticket explaining that you were hacked. Give as much detail as possible about missing items and characters, as well as the approximate time of the event. If you cannot access your account, you can email or call Blizzard's customer service department and give them the same information. The sooner you contact the company and report the hack, the sooner they can begin the investigation and restoration process.
- After you report the hack, the waiting game begins. Account recovery takes time, and it may be as long as two weeks before the recovery department completes the investigation and restores your account, depending on the nature of the intrusion. They may also need to lock your account for part of the investigation, so be prepared to spend some time away from the game. Try to be patient when dealing with support personnel and game masters during this period, because they have to deal with a large volume of hacked accounts every day, and justifiably frustrated players. Remember that in most cases, you will regain everything that you have lost.
- Once Blizzard has restored your account, take steps to prevent further attacks. If you have a compatible cellphone, you can download a free Authenticator application that will provide an additional layer of security for your account and reduce the chances of being hacked again. You can also purchase a key-chain RSA token version of the Authenticator for a nominal fee.
