How to Find a Car Using the VIN Number
- 1). Decode the VIN. Go to the resource at angelfire.com and click on the link for each digit, one at a time. You can find where the car was made, by what company, certain equipment options, the year, specific manufacturing plant and the particular vehicle's serial number.
- 2). Decode the VIN automatically at the resource at dmv.org. Enter the VIN into the space provided and click on "Search." The next screen shows basic information on the vehicle, make, model, etc. It will also tell you how many vehicle history reports are available and offer to sell you one.
- 3). Purchase a vehicle history report. Various sites on the Internet offer them for around $20 to $40 with discounts for volume purchases as of September 2010. The history report includes all repair information available on the vehicle, along with all owners including the latest. Owner contact information may vary from one report to another, but you should at least get the name and address.
