Municipal Ball Opens Carnival Celebrations in Recife
The Recife Carnival Ball (Baile Municipal do Recife, Feb.7, 2015) is an annual celebration promoted by the City of Recife at the Chevrolet Hall.
The sumptuously decorated hall, the costume contests and a superb lineup of musicians playing frevo, maracatu and other types of Carnival music attract about 16,000 people to the ball, which officially opens Carnival in Recife and lasts about seven hours.
This year, the party will feature seven straight hours of frevo. Music without interruptions was a request from the city's first lady, Cristina Mello, and the innovation was announced during a press conference at Forte das Cinco Pontas on Monday, January 19.
Maestro Spok and Clube Carnavalesco Bola de Ouro,Pernambuco artists officially commemorated by the city this Carnival, will share the stage with Almir Rouche, André Rio, Elba Ramalho, Gustavo Travassos,Orquestra Popular do Recife (directed by Ademir Araújo), Nena Queiroga, Coral Edgard Moraes, Orquestra Popular da Bomba do Hemetério (directed by Maestro Forró), among other artists.
The ball was launched in the early 1960s, when Miguel Arraes was the Recife mayor. Vice mayor Arthur Lima Cavalcanti, known for his talent as a Carnival songwriter, was put in charge of the party. The ball was held at Clube Internacional and at Clube Português do Recife before moving to the Chevrolet Hall in 2002.
Elaborate costumes are a hallmark of the Recife Carnival Ball, but dressing up in costume is optional.
Dedicated revelers have a chance to shine in two costume contests open to the public. The main one is to be held at Chevrolet Hall on February 6, the night before the party, and sign up till January 23 at Pátio de São Pedro 39 (the cost is 1kg of nonperishable food). First to third place in the categories Luxury and Originality will be featured in the Municipal Ball. The city is awarding R$52000 in prizes.
The other contest takes place at the ball itself. Revelers can have their photo taken at a stand set up at the entrance and prizes will be awarded to the best individual and group costumes.
