How to Emcee a Wedding Reception
- 1). Sit down with the bride and groom to discuss the details of the ceremony. Verify that everything that is standard from the first dance to the cake cutting will be performed. Cut out any areas the couple wants to remove, such as a garter toss, and add any that need to be included, such as a special dance to honor kids in attendance. Double-check the order so that everyone is on the same page.
- 2). Plan to make overall announcements first. This includes things such as instructions for meal preparation, special instructions for seating or rules on the bar. Keep your announcements short and sweet to not take away from the mood of the festivities.
- 3). Be personable when you engage with guests and make announcements. Speak loudly and clearly. Use a microphone even in small venues to assure all of the guests can hear you. If you are only emceeing and not the DJ, organize your music for special dances so that you're not searching for them when the time comes.
- 4). Plan to announce your special guests, including the bride and groom. Work with your couple during the planning process to get the proper pronunciation of names you need to mention. Write out your own little cheat sheet in case you forget during the party.
- 5). Make announcements when it's time to welcome the wedding party, announcement of the bride and groom, make toasts and announce the dances. When it's time to get everyone's attention for things like the cake cutting or getting on the dance floor, remember to repeat yourself in case the chatter among guests causes them to be distracted.
- 6). Make final announcements towards the end of the reception thanking guests for attending. Turn over the microphone to the bride and groom, so they can make their heartfelt salute before the evening is over.
