How to File a Complaint Against a Voting Location
- 1). Contact your county elections office. The supervisor of elections for your county oversees the voting process for your community, including managing all the voting precinct locations. Call, visit or email your local elections supervisor and alert her to the problem. Be specific and provide details on any suspected fraud or procedural violation. Offer potential solutions to resolve the issue. The elections supervisor is typically located in a county courthouse or other government building.
- 2). Contact the district attorney's office. If you believe an election law has been violated at your voting location, speak with someone at your district attorney's office. Explain what has occurred and ask this office to investigate. To locate your district attorney's office, go to the state attorney's website and search district office listings.
- 3). Contact state election officials. Your state election commission is your next contact if the problem is not resolved on the local level. The link to the state election website will likely be available on your local election page. The site should have a complaint form available or information on how to obtain one. For instance, Florida's Division of Elections has separate forms for voting fraud, violation of voting system standards, and voter registration database violations.
- 4). Contact federal authorities. One level above your state's election office is the Federal Election Commission (FEC). Contact this agency specifically if you believe a violation of federal voting laws has occurred at the voting location. According to the FEC website, complaints must be filed in writing and notarized. State the violation you believe has occurred and include any documentation to support your complaint.
