About Salicylic Acid

24

    History

    • Salicylic acid was initially discovered by American Indians in the bark and leaves of willow bark and meadow sweet. However, it can be traced as far back as the writing of Hippocrates. He wrote about a bitter powder known to reduce aches, pains and fevers. The American Indians would chew the bark that contained the original form of salicylic acid (known as acetyl salicylic acid), and it would cure headaches and other ailments that needed an anti-inflammatory.

    Uses

    • Salicylic acid is an inexpensive topical medication used to treat a number of skin related problems. You can use salicylic acid for acne, warts, dandruff, psoriasis, and similar skin conditions. Other uses include food preservation, antiseptic uses and in toothpaste. It is also the main ingredient in aspirin. When used for acne, it slows the shedding of skin cells in your hair follicles so they do not clog your pores and cause pimples. Salicylic acid also helps dead skins cells to slough off which removes the top layer of your skin which also helps unclog pores. When used for warts, a stronger dose of salicylic acid is needed. It softens the wart so you can rub it off. Salicylic acid is also in many plants such as broccoli, peppers, curry, and cucumbers.

    Side Effects

    • Using salicylic acid is easy because you can get it at almost every drug store over the counter. However, with all medication (prescribed or over-the-counter), there are serious or minor side effects. Some common side effects are dry skin, but this is usually mild. If this occurs, usually a light oil-free moisturizer helps soothe the dryness. Skin irritation is another common side effect. If you experience any type of skin irritation, try decreasing use. If you are experiencing severe skin irritation, discontinue use completely. Another serious side effect--called salicylic acid poisoning--includes severe headaches, rapid breathing or a buzzing in your ears.

    Benefits

    • There are so many different uses for salicylic acid. These all make it quite beneficial. You can get treatments with salicylic acid without a prescription and can find it at almost any drug or retail store. Salicylic acid is very safe and has few side effects that usually go away with time and a little effort. Salicylic acid also contains BHA or Beta Hydroxy Acid, which is a very popular tool in combating stretch marks and wrinkles.

    Warnings

    • When using salicylic acid, make sure you pay close attention to your skin. For some people who are very sensitive, it can cause serious skin problems. Most treatments used for acne have about .5 to 2 percent salicylic acid. If you do develop some type of skin irritation, you should check the other skin products you are using. Using it isn't a good idea if you use abrasive soaps, alcohol containing products, cosmetics that dry the skin, medicated cosmetics, or other topical acne medications with benzoyl peroxide or sulfur. Also, if you are planning on becoming pregnant and are using salicylic acid to cover large portions of your body, consult your doctor before hand.
