More Challenges and Stress For Sarah Palin

38
I have been writing a series of article about the psychology and physiology of stress but lately it seems that my attention is focused much more on people in the public eye.
As I have watched the presidential campaign over the last months, I have been intrigued by the impact that all the media attention and public interest must have had on the stress levels of the four contenders, Barak, John, Joe, and Sarah.
Closer to home, as Sarah Palin is the Governor of the state in which I live, I have been concerned about the media pressure being applied to Sarah's return to Alaska.
Every morning the local newspaper has more articles that seem to underscore how difficult things will be for her now that she is no longer campaigning at the national level.
Today's lead story is no different.
Sarah has seven challenges, the newspaper reports, she has to confront.
It is worth, from a psychological point of view, briefly commenting on the potential stress and tension that some of those these challenges will provide.
Will she be able to gain Federal support for Alaska from a Democrat administration when she has been so critical of Barack Obama? The stress for her will be to argue a consistent message that she holds no personal disregard for the President-elect even though she reportedly criticized his relations with alleged terrorists and religious malcontents.
Remaining true to her convictions but dealing with daily government business will be stressful.
The second challenge referred to is about the levels of suspicion that people will hold about her intent and motives especially when people are excited at the thought of her being a Republican candidate for the 2012 presidential elections.
She will be ever defensive about her actions and will have to convince people that anything that she does is for the good of Alaska.
Constant defensiveness is tiring and stressful.
I will deal with the other issues in a subsequent article but it is not hard to see how the stress levels are building for Sarah Palin, our returning Governor.
She has her family and social support to assist her in dealing with the stress and challenges.
In clinical settings, I often use progressive muscle relaxation with patients to mitigate the physiological correlates of stress.
Mental imagery and prayer are two other very effective personal mechanisms for stress relief.
I am confident, though, as I have said previously, that Sarah has the stress relief mechanisms to ensure she can chart a smooth and effective return to the governorship of Alaska.
