How to Remove & Replace Vinyl Flooring
- 1). Scrape up the old floor tiles using a heavy floor scraper, prying it between two tiles and then pushing it forward to take up the rest. Discard the tiles.
- 2). Go over the floor with a razor scraper to take up the residual glue, getting it smooth and flat.
- 3). Sweep the floor. Scrub with household floor cleanser. Mop-rinse. Let it dry for two days.
- 4). Lay two intersecting lines over the floor with a chalk snap line to divide it into four equal quadrants. Use a carpenter's square to ensure that the two lines are perpendicular.
- 5). Spread tile adhesive over the middle of the floor with a notched trowel, covering the intersection and a few square feet around it. You will be able to see the lines through the adhesive.
- 6). Press a vinyl tile at the intersection so that it's bordered by the lines on two adjacent sides. Set it firmly. Press additional tiles in around it, fitting them snugly.
- 7). Build out from the middle to the edges of the floor, spreading more adhesive and setting more tiles. Use the lines to keep the grid straight. Cut the tiles at the walls with your razor knife, scoring them and then bending them until they break. Let the tiles set for a full day.
