The Poulan 3400 counter-vibe chain saw is a solid-state ignition device that runs on a gasoline and oil mixture. The original retail box should include these items: chain, scrench (maintenance tool), power head (main saw body), guide bar, loose parts bag, spur with two screws and the operator's manual. - The chain saw runs on a two-cycle engine which demands a mixture of gasoline and high grade oil specifically made for two-cycle air-cooled engines. The overall power of the engine (measured by displacement) is 56 cubic centimeters or 3.4 cubic inches.
- The gasoline must not be more than two months old, since chemical breakdown will damage the engine and create problems when starting the machine. The ratio of oil to gasoline must be precise. Too much oil will mess up the spark plug, whereas too little will result in engine overheating. Fuel tank capacity is 19 oz.
- The muffler is a "spark arresting/temperature limiting" kind, and the oil system is automatic with manual override. The oil tank capacity is 12 oz. A Champion CJ-8Y spark plug is included.
- Safety requirements of the American National Standards Institute influenced the following features. A reduced kick-back guide bar is in place to diminish the zone of kickback (where the saw could injure the user). The chain has a contoured depth gauge and guard link to reduce the force of kickback by allowing the chain to cut wood in a smoother fashion. A hand guard is also in place to protect the left hand from possible injury. The alignment of front and rear handlebars is designed to achieve optimum balance by offering better pivot control if kickback happens.
