Information On How To Stop A Puppy From Biting

46
Puppies are extremely cute and sometimes this is the main reason why owners find it especially hard to be stern with them.
Training them therefore becomes a little redundant when it is allowed to behave the way it wants.
The puppy stage is when you can most effectively train your dog because as it gets older and set in its ways, changing the pattern will be more and more difficult.
As a puppy it is more amicable to change and is easier to mould.
One particular quirk a puppy picks up by the time it's about 2 months old is that it start biting every one around it.
Though it is not the intention of the puppy to attack it still will nip at any part of your body it can get into its tiny mouth.
This habit is usually curbed by the littermates or its mother if the pup is allowed to be around them for a prolonged period.
The pup learns quickly if it bites a littermate that mate will bite it right back! This shows it that there are consequences that are a little painful and eventually the pup will stop.
But since this time is not given to the pup the burden of teaching it that biting is not acceptable comes on to you.
Training it requires a lot of patience and consistency.
Patience is required because if you only yell and shout at it all the time it will grow up to not trust you and might sometime bite you out of fear.
What you need is a positive reinforcement technique.
And consistency is required because if you take breaks and allow it to behave in the way it wants then the pup will never get used to the behavior protocol you want to instill in it.
There are two basic ways that you can use to stop the biting.
You will have to redirect its attention to something else that it can chew rather than your fingers.
When it starts to bite, firmly and clearly say 'No' and immediately give it a chew toy or chew stick so that it will realize that biting fingers is not acceptable but the chew toy is ok.
Also, if you make a soft whining noise or a yip that a pup would typically make when hurt, then it will startle it and it will stop what its doing.
This way you can help condition it into an acceptable behavior.
