• According to the University of Maryland Medical center, one of the most effective ways to treat vomiting is with an over-the-counter bismuth solution such as Pepto-Bismol. It helps treat nausea (which very often leads to vomiting), and thus helps prevent vomiting from taking place. Pepto-Bismol comes in liquid and pill form, the latter of which is perfect for those who can not tolerate the taste.
  
  If the vomiting is due to motion sickness, over-the-counter medications such as Dramamine can help stop it and even prevent it before it starts. Pepto-Bismol should not be taken by those who have or recently had the flu or chicken pox, as the salicylates in the medication could result in complications.
  
  

Other Home Remedies

• In addition to over-the-counter medications, simply drinking plenty of water, clear juices, or even a carbonated beverage such as ginger ale can help quell nausea and subsequent vomiting. If the vomiting is excessive, these liquids can help replace any lost water and thus help prevent dehydration. If it occurs in young children, there are a number of over-the-counter rehydration solutions, such as Pedialyte, that can help your child replenish lost fluids and feel better.
  
  When using medication, you should get adequate rest so as to not exacerbate the problem. According to the Cleveland Clinic, vomiting can occur for a variety of reasons, so the proper way to treat is to abstain from anything that might upset the stomach, such as the consumption of spicy or large amounts of food. If the vomiting continues for a long period of time, you should consult with a physician immediately.
