Nontoxic Insecticides for Ants

    Diatomaceous Earth

    • Use diatomaceous earth to control ant populations. Diatomaceous earth is the powdered remains of diatoms, an ancient type of algae found in the ocean. Though it may feel like a fine powder, the stuff is actually comprised of jagged edges that cut into the hard outer shells of ants and other insects, which kills them. It also tears up ants and other insects from inside if ingested. Diatomaceous earth is nontoxic to humans and pets, though excessive inhalation of the powder should be avoided. Spread the powder wherever ants seem to appear, for nontoxic control.

    Mint

    • Deter ants from your home using mint. Plant mint around the perimeter of your home, and used crushed leaves and cloves wherever ants seem to appear. Mint tea bags are also effective deterrents; leave them around where ants appear. Mint also works as a deterrent for mosquitoes. Keep mint plants around your deck while entertaining to help prevent guests from getting bitten.

    Borax

    • Control ant populations by mixing 1 teaspoon of borax with 1 cup of sugar in 1 quart of water. Soak a few cotton balls in the mixture, and place the cotton balls in an empty yogurt cup. Punch holes in the top of the yogurt lid with a hole punch, and place the cotton ball-yogurt containers wherever ants are present. The ants climb into the trap and take the bait back to their nest, which subsequently kills the colony. Keep these traps away from pets and children.

    Dish Soap Spray

    • Create a homemade nontoxic spray for ant problems. Squeeze liquid dish detergent into a spray bottle, and fill it with water to create a soapy mixture. For best results, use a soap that does not contain too many fragrances and dyes. Spray the mixture on ants in the home to kill them, and use the mixture on flowers and plants outdoors to keep ants away.
