How to Paint an Interior Door That Was Stained
- 1). Sand the door with fine-grit sandpaper, either by hand or with a palm sander. This will rough up the surface and allow for better paint adhesion. Sanding also removes any varnish previously on the doors, which will not allow for good paint adhesion.
- 2). Clean the door off with a damp washcloth to remove any fine sawdust created by sanding. Sawdust can also lead to poor adhesion.
- 3). Apply an oil-based primer over the entire door. Roll a flat door or use a brush for paneled doors or details. Apply a second coat of primer once the first coat is dry.
- 4). Spray, roll or brush the paint onto the surface. Once spraying is complete, roll over the surface with a paint roller, also known as back rolling, for a smoother finish. Use a brush to get any panel details.
