Coprophagia - Why Do Dogs Eat Feces?

12
Dogs really do have some obnoxious behaviors.
No matter how well fed a dog is, it sometimes can not resist the temptation of eating its own, other dogs and other animals feces.
This behavior is known as coprophagia.
To us humans, the poop eating habit is disgusting.
After all not only do we allow our pets to share our beds, but we also allow them to lick our faces.
It would certainly be revolting to see the dog have its fill of poop while playing in the dog park and then vomit on the carpet once it gets home.
Dogs are not very discriminating when it comes to choosing what they eat.
They raid garbage cans and eat spoiled food, they have the penchant to dig and eat obnoxious smelling things buried days ago and it would not be surprising if they eat poop that is easily found in the ground where they walk, run and play.
Dogs are scavengers.
Eating feces is one of the dogs scavenging activities.
It was once believed that the feces eating behavior is the dogs way of filling up a nutrient deficiency.
However this has been refuted by animal behaviorists.
They have noted that bored dogs and those that are seeking attention from the master or from the human family have a higher tendency to eat feces.
Dogs that eat feces will be scolded by the owner.
While the attention it is getting is negative it is nevertheless still attention.
Nobody really understand what goes on in a dogs mind.
The dog might thinks that poop is an elixir that would make it stronger or the dog simply loves the taste and the smell of feces.
Overfed dogs have undigested food in their poop.
As the voracious eaters they are, they sometimes consider the poop as food.
Coprophagia can also stem from an underlying medical problem such as malabsorption syndrome, pancreatitis, and intestinal infections to name a few.
The habit of eating feces can be the dogs way of imitating its master.
This is known as the allelomimetic behavior.
The dog may have watched the master remove the feces and because of the canine eagerness to please, the dog think that the master will be pleased if it cleans the area by removing the feces.
And since dogs use their mouth in the same way that we use our hands where do you think the poop goes? Dogs will eat feces because of hunger.
When a well fed dog see other dogs eating feces in public areas they will be enticed to try.
"Hmmm, why does my mom not feed me this exotic food?"
