How to Cover a Crawl Space
- 1). Measure the opening to your crawl space using a measuring tape. Apply these measurements to a 3/4-inch piece of plywood and pencil your marks onto the wood for cutting.
- 2). Cut the 3/4-inch plywood according to your pencil marks, using an electric hand saw. Place the cut piece of plywood into the crawl space opening to make sure it fits properly. Make any adjustments, if needed, before moving on.
- 3). Measure sides, top and bottom of the crawl space opening using a measuring tape. Use these measurements and cut 2-by-4-inch pieces of lumber to size, using an electric hand saw.
- 4). Use a hammer and concrete nails to hammer the four pieces of cut lumber into place around the inside of the crawl space opening. Make sure the lumber sets 1 inch back from the exterior portion of the crawl space opening, to leave room for the door to close properly.
- 5). Apply spray foam or stuff insulation into any cracks that may be present between the crawl space door frame and the home's foundation.
- 6). Mount two hinges on one of the sides of the door. Attach the hinges to the 2-by-4-inch piece of lumber using screws and a power drill with the proper drill bit. Attach one hinge 3 inches from the top of the door, and the other hinge 3 inches from the bottom of the door.
- 7). Mount a door handle onto the plywood door, if you wish. Although optional, a door handle will make it easier to open the door.
- 8). Mount the plywood door to the hinges, while a partner holds the door in place. Test the door to make sure the hinges are working properly and the door will swing into place.
