Trophy Hunting in Michigan
- A valid driver's license, state identification or military identification card that has been issued by an authorized governmental agency is needed to apply for a hunting license from the Michigan DNR. A previous DNR Sportcard is also an acceptable form of identification when applying for a hunting license. You must also present your hunter safety certificate to be approved for a Michigan deer hunting license.
- Michigan is home to many types of game, small and large. Deer can be found in almost every part of the state. Wild turkey, elk, boar and bear can be found in Michigan's wooded areas, all of which are capable of producing a trophy specimen.
- Plenty of hunting preserves are also available for hunters who would like to increase their odds at landing a trophy buck. Preserves can be found in both the Upper and Lower Peninsulas; preserves that are located on private land and licensed with the state don't even require hunters to have a Michigan hunting license to hunt and shoot game. Because these preserves offer controlled environments, and because some offer veteran hunting guides to show you around the area, your chances of finding trophy worthy game is greater than it would be hunting by yourself in the wild.
- Your choice of trophy game has the biggest impact on the exact equipment used, but there are some that are more commonly seen than others. Handguns, rifles and muzzleloaders are among the most common firearms. Bows and crossbows are also legal for hunting in the state.
- If you're on a trophy hunt in Michigan, be selective. For example, with a normal Michigan deer hunting license, you are only able to take two bucks as you will be given only two kill tags per license. So be sure that you're aiming at your next trophy buck before taking the shot.
