Good Podcasting Practices for Children

23
    • A podcast is similar to a radio program, though a podcast is not live. A podcast is uploaded to a website or blog and then downloaded or listened to online by an audience. Podcasting offers children a way to communicate their ideas, organize information and collaborate with other young people around the world. School assignments, interviews with friends and family, plays, speeches and local news are suitable topics for podcasts. Podcasts are interactive in the sense that children may receive feedback from their audience. Create your own podcasts by following certain procedures.

    Using Hardware

    • Hardware requirements for podcasting are basic. Children need access to a digital recording device and audio-editing software. Some computers have built-in audio recorders. Sound quality is usually better using a separate microphone rather than the ones built into most computers. When recording, keep the microphone close to the mouth so that it doesn't pick up background noise. The same rule applies to using built-in computer microphones. Always check to see that the batteries are charged when using a battery-powered recorder. Take an extra supply of batteries when recording "on location."

    Using Software

    • Find free, open-source recording and editing software. This makes podcasting an inexpensive activity. Create a library of copyright-free sound effects and music for the podcast and keep them stored in a central place for easy access. If a library of copyright-free resources is available, children won't be tempted to use copyrighted material.

    Working with Scripts and Content

    • Have children listen to other podcasts before they begin creating their own. This gives them an idea of what formats are generally acceptable and successful. Create a format or template to use each week and just add new content. Vary the content and recording locations. Do interviews and stories on location to add interest to your podcast. This gives the audience something to look forward to, and it makes it easy for the podcasting team to plan each week's program. Write a script for each podcast. With a script, children can concentrate on their speaking voices without having to think about what they are going to say. The script keeps children from mispronunciations and pauses. Writing a script is a great way to practice and improve writing skills. Use short clear sentences and write directly to the point.

    Recording the Podcast

    • Listen to other podcasts to get an idea about timing, tone and special effects. Have children speak slowly and read from the script. Check sound levels to make sure that the special effects, music and other additions are not too soft or loud compared to the talking. Record the special effects and music on separate tracks that are distinct from the main talk. Edit the recording before putting it on the Internet. Take out pauses, coughs and "ums." Play the completed podcast back before uploading it.
