Colorado Hunter Safety Requirement
- Hunters of elk, deer, pronghorn, moose or black bear are required to wear daylight fluorescent orange garments of sufficient brightness to be seen from a reasonable distance. The garment must be a minimum of 500 square inches, worn as the outermost garment and be worn above the waist. Part of the garment also must include a head piece.
- The DOW requires hunters understand basic survival tips in the event they become lost or stranded. Preparation is key to survival. Hunters should inform someone of their exact destination and plans to return. Also, three basic necessities improve survival chances for hunters lost in the wilderness: shelter, food and fire. Hunters can plan for these three necessities by bringing adequate clothing for inclement weather, high-energy snack bars and strike-anywhere matches in a waterproof container. Water purification tablets, a bright orange signal cloth, compass and map are additional items that should be included in a survival kit.
- Firearms can pose a safety hazard to other hunters and bystanders in the area. Hunters may not carelessly discharge firearms in a manner that disregards human life and property, which could lead to injury and death. Loaded rifles or shotguns are not permitted in a motor vehicle. Similarly, loaded firearms are not permitted on off-highway vehicles during big game seasons. Discharging firearms on, from, or across a road is not permitted.
- All hunters must completely extinguish any fire they set. When threat of forest fire is high, the Colorado Division of Emergency Management will issue a fire ban or fire restriction in designated areas. Hunters should comply with these announcements for the protection of their safety, as well as the wilderness in which they hunt.
- Hunters who violate Colorado hunting safety requirements could face serious criminal charges. Fines, damages to victims and court costs may additionally be assessed.
