How to Get Flood Insurance in Florida
- 1). Visit the National Flood Insurance Program’s (NFIP) website. (A link to the site is provided in the Resources section below.) This site contains valuable information pertaining to flood insurance, preparing for a natural flood disaster and the risks associated with the aftermath of floods.
- 2). View your Florida flood insurance carrier options. You can do this directly from the NFIP website. In the left column of the site you will see options for “Residential Coverage” or “Commercial Coverage.” Select the option that applies to your needs. You will be taken to a brief overview or explanation of what either residential or commercial flood insurance is and what it covers.
- 3). Click the option titled “Agent Locator” located in the left column on the website. Enter your Florida zip code into the search box to retrieve a list of flood insurance agents in your area. Contact one or more agents to request an insurance quote. Select an agent that offers an insurance package that fits both your budget and your property protection needs.
- 4). Purchase flood insurance from the insurance carrier that you selected. The process involves completing an application, signing additional paperwork and paying an installment on your insurance premium. The application process typically involves providing information about the property to be insured, such as the address, the value of the home and the value of any personal property items inside the home that you wish to protect. Your insurance agent will draft your policy documents. It is advisable that you carefully review your policy documents before signing.
