What to Do After Completing Texas Adult Driver"s Ed

128
Congratulations on completing your Texas Adult Driver's Ed course! The meat of the work is done, and now all you need to do is follow a few more steps and demonstrate in person at the DPS that you are capable of driving safely behind the wheel of a real car. You're in the home stretch now, so just finish up with these last remaining tasks. You'll be a licensed driver in no time at all.

The Necessary Paperwork
The first thing to take care of is ensuring that you have all the necessary paperwork and legal forms before you arrive at the DPS. You must complete an Application for a Texas Driver's License, and bring proof of identity and Texas residency, your social security card, and your vehicle insurance and registration information. Without all these documents with you at the time of your DPS appointment, you will not be allowed to take the driving test and get your license.

Physical Checkup

The DPS will need proof that your vision and hearing are sufficient for motor vehicle operation. You are required to have 20/40 vision or better in at least one eye (with or without glasses) for a regular license. There is also a possibility to obtain a restricted license if you can demonstrate 20/70 vision or better. The DPS will not let you operate a car if they feel you will not be able to see and hear hazards well enough to react appropriately to them.

The Written Exam
Upon completing the multiple-choice final exam of your driver's education course, you should have received an official certificate of completion in the mail. The DPS usually requires applicants to pass a written exam covering the basics of Texas road rules and signs/signals, but your certificate of completion will effectively negate the need to take this exam. In the eyes of the Texas DPS, completing a state-approved driver's education course is more than adequate proof of your knowledge of these things.

The Driving Test
Now it's time for the real moment of glory. You'll take a certified driving instructor out in your car and show him or her that you are capable of driving in a safe and legal manner. The instructor will take notes on any minor or major mistakes you make during the short route you drive. If you are nervous about taking the test, it's not a bad idea to drive the route a few times beforehand so you will be very familiar with it. It's better to be overprepared than underprepared on the driving test.

If you pass the test, you will be granted your license with full privileges right away. If you fail, the instructor will talk with you about what factors of driving you need to pay more attention to, and will tell you when you can retake the test. Don't get discouraged if this happens. Plenty of people don't pass their first time around and still end up becoming exceptional drivers. Good luck out there.
