How to Tell If You Need a Statin Drug
- 1). Look for warning signs in addition to high cholesterol readings: previous angioplasty or bypass surgery, family history of cardiovascular disease or high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes or peripheral vascular disease, smoking, excess weight and previous heart attack or chest pain.
- 2). Be willing to make a lifelong commitment to taking statins. Statins must constantly stay in the body in order to be effective.
- 3). Make healthy lifestyle changes like eating a low-fat diet, reducing stress and increasing your exercise. If your cholesterol is still high, a statin may be right for you.
