How to Change Car Amp Speaker Wires Into RCA Plugs

    • 1). Separate the two wires, if they are attached, by pulling them apart for a couple of inches to allow room to strip the excess plastic insulation or to cut off the existing connectors. There will be two wires attached together for each speaker.

    • 2). Cut off the old connectors if necessary, then strip off about an inch of the plastic insulation, being careful not to cut through the wire. If each wire is made of smaller wires bundled together, twist the wires with your finger to make it easier to solder on the RCA plugs.

    • 3). Unscrew the jacket from the RCA plug, and with the threaded end towards the bare wire, slide the jacket over the wire so it can be screwed on after soldering.

    • 4). Figure out which speaker wire is ground and which is positive. The red wire is usually positive and black is negative. On the RCA plug, the center pin will be positive while the outside pin is negative.

    • 5). Lay both wires in the flat metal piece at the end of the RCA plug and use the crimping tool to close the metal around the wires, holding them in place.

    • 6). Heat up the soldering iron. Touch the solder and the tip of the iron together at the same time in direct contact with the wire until a drop of solder melts onto the wire and the metal post, then pull it away and let the solder harden. Do the same with the other wire.

    • 7). Test the connections to make sure they hold, and make sure that no frayed pieces of wire are sticking out, which could cause a short. Slip the jacket back on the RCA plug and screw it together. Repeat with the wire for the other speaker or speakers.
