If you can Create a Document, you can Edit a Basic Website

• 1). If you can use word processing software like Microsoft Word or Works, you can edit a basic website. Having a professional website designer edit your website can get expensive. If you just need to add or modify text and images you can edit your website yourself with a word processing program like Microsoft Word or Works.Most word processing programs operate basically the same. Before you can edit your website you must have the website or html file saved on your hard drive. Open your word processing software and open your website index.html file first. Select the text you want to edit and edit the text as you would any word document.
  
  
• 2). The rules for editing a website in a word processing program is accomplished the same way any other document is edited, with two exceptions: 1. All images must be saved without spaces. Example: “photoofme” would be correct, “photo of me” will not be visible with certain web browsers because of the spaces in the name of the image. 2. The document must be saved as a web page or html (htm).Hyper Text Mark-Up Language is html or htm. Word documents carry the extension .doc; web page files extension is html or htm.

• 4). Making changes on your website is just like editing a letter or report with text and images. Most websites have images. Changing images on your website using your word processing program is accomplished by clicking on the image you want to replace and delete or cut the images from the page. To replace the image with another image, click in the place you want the image, go to "Insert" on the menu bar, go down to picture and select an image from your files or clip art. The image you insert or existing images on your website can also be resized. Click on the image and click on the resizing boxes to make the image larger or smaller.
  
  
• 5). To change a heading on your web page, format the text the same as you would a word document. Select the text, format the size, color or style using your menu bar or tool bar options. To change the background color of your website, go up to "Format" on the menu bar and down to "Background," select the color and click "OK." Editing your website text and images with a word processing program is almost identical to editing any document that includes text and images. The extensions identify the type of file you are editing. The differences are the lack of spaces in the file names and the way the page is saved. Uploading your edited website to the Internet is accomplished with an FTP or File Transfer Protocol utility. FTP utility downloads are free on the Internet and come with easy-to-follow instructions. Uploading or publishing your edited website is the final step. Don't be intimidated by utilities like FTPs; some of the FTP utilities have drag and drop features. Keep all current versions of your website saved on your hard drive and backed up on a CD or removal drive.To find and download an FTP, conduct an Internet search for "free FTP downloads." Editing your website is as easy as creating a document with text and images.
