How to Remove a Drip Edge
- 1). Pry the shingles away from the edge of the roof, directly above the drip edge. If you're replacing the roof itself, you don't need to pry the roof away carefully -- you can simply rip it out. But if the roof is in adequate condition, you must be careful when lifting it. Lift the shingles up enough to uncover the heads of the nails that fasten the drip edge in place.
- 2). Push the sharp end of a pry bar or lifting tool under each nail that holds the drip edge in place, then carefully press against it or hit it with a hammer until you can lift the nail slightly. When the nail lifts, pull it out of the drip edge and sheathing of the roof with either a hammer or the pry bar. Continue lifting the nails along the length of the drip edge until you've removed each of them.
- 3). Check to see if you can lift the drip edge free. If so, remove it and replace it. If not, it was likely caulked into position before the nails were added.
- 4). Stick the blade of a putty knife under one edge of the drip edge and hammer the knife under the drip edge to cut through the caulk. Continue doing so along the entire length of the drip edge, then lift it out of place. Remove the drip edge on the other eave of the roof using the same method.
