21 Jump Street A Remake Done Right
There are lots and lots of examples of bad remakes out there in the theaters today. Take any recent horror remake as a case in point. It seems like there are no new ideas for films these days. It is all just rehashed, regurgitated, unoriginal tripe. So when a film gets it right it is reason to celebrate. That is why 21 Jump Street deserves all the kudos that I can throw at it. Something Old is New Again
The main reason that Jump Street succeeds is that is not afraid to play with and put a new twist on the old material. It strays so far from its name sake, in fact, that one wonders why it even needed it in the first place. Either way, it works, and the twist at the end is enough to justify the use of this property in a completely unrelated venture. The film pay its due homage to the original, adding just enough of the best parts of the TV show and updating them for current audiences. The movie also take the chance to poke a bit of fun at current teenagers with shots at skinny jeans, sensitivity, and eco-mindedness. This is the correct formula for adapting something old into something new, and other directors and producers should take notice.
Not Too Serious
Another aspect that makes this a great film is that it does not take itself too seriously. Now that may seem like a weird thing to say about a comedy but it is the truth. Jump Street keeps the action and the drama fun and light, and never tries too hard. The film keeps it just goofy enough without going over the top. A good example of this is the altered state scenes. They could have easily gone way over the top with this and had the whole world spinning out of control in a kaleidoscope of colors and effects, but they kept it simple and the results were hilarious. The film also kept the absurdity level in check as well. Even though you have two cops in a student driver car escaping from a biker gang while one of them is dressed as peter pan, it all stays believable and very funny.
Turning Cliches on Their Head
This film has a great time taking shots, so to speak, at the cop show and buddy cop genres. The film does not overblow the smart cop, athletic cop dynamic and uses it for just the right amount of humor, which is almost none. And the bicycle scenes at the beginning were a great spoof on slow motion cop show scene. The explosions, or lack thereof, during the car chases are the ultimate spoof on a staple of the genre and were well executed.
