Getting rid of fungus in your fingernails or toenails can be a big pain.
I know.
I had terrible nail fungus for many years.
Thick, yellow, crumbly nails - yep been there.
I couldn't wear sandals in the summer and I avoided swimming pools for fear of embarrassment.
Maybe you're there now.
Maybe you're looking for a solution.
Fortunately I found out how to get rid of fungus on my nails.
I'm going to share with you the options you have when trying to cure nail fungus.
Medical Cures for Nail Fungus: If you want to know how to get rid of fungus medically, there are a few options.
Some of these are available over the counter, but most will need a prescription.
First, there are a few over the counter topical creams available for treating nail fungus.
Let me tell you right now: They don't really work.
At best they can help treat the symptoms, but only in very mild cases can they cure them.
These creams are rubbed directly onto the fingers or toes every night.
After a week or so, you will notice some improvement, but hardly ever do these creams cure the underlying problem.
A better topical medication that's available by prescription is antifungal nail polish.
These lacquers are very effective at curing mild and moderate cases of nail fungus; but they take time to work.
It may take 3-6 months to completely cure a moderate case of nail fungus.
Oral antifungal medications are also very effective.
They get straight to the root of the problem by making your body inhospitable to the fungi.
These also take up to 6 months to completely eliminate the nail fungus.
For severe cases, you and you doctor may decide to resort to surgery.
Your doctor will have to remove the entire nail from the nail bed.
Ideally, a new healthy nail will grow back, but sometimes the fungus can remain in the nail bed and reinfect the new nail.
To be sure, it may be a good idea to combine an oral antifungal medication with surgery.
It seems lasers are being used for treating all kinds of medical conditions these days, and there are some promising developments in the use of lasers to eliminate nail fungi.
These treatments aren't available everywhere yet, and they're very expensive, but you may want to explore this treatment with your doctor.
When trying to figure out how to get rid of fungus, make sure you explore all the medical options available with your doctor.
There are also a couple really effective home remedies for nail fungus.
But that's for another article!
