• 1). Set a spending limit for how much you want to spend on lures. This will allow you to start out with an ideal supply rather than buying too much.
  
  
• 2). Know what kind of water feature you will be fishing, and where it is located. Ponds, lakes and rivers are all different, so buy according to the places you will most often be fishing. You won't need an ocean-fishing lure to catch pond fish, for example.
  
  
• 3). Know what kind of fish you will be fishing for. Certain lures attract certain fish, so be sure to read the details on the lure's packaging.
  
  
• 4). Decide which types of lures you want to purchase. There are wide varieties of lures on the market. Crankbaits and topwater lures, for example, are commonly available and widely used for freshwater fishing.
