A Look at Subway"s History

90
When we hear the word "Subway", we often times associate it with healthy sandwiches and delicious Subway cookies recipe. But some time ago, the word was only the name of an underground rapid transit. So how did Subway become what it is today?

Going back to 1965, a 17-year old high school graduate named Fred DeLuca had dreamt to become a medical doctor. Because he needed money to pay for his college tuition to fulfill this dream, he consulted his family friend and nuclear physicist, Dr Peter Buck for financial advice. This is when Dr Buck had suggested that he opened a submarine sandwich shop to earn the money. He said that if Fred was willing to do it, he would become his business partner. With a "yes", Dr Buck wrote a check for $1,000, which was used to open the shop called Pete's Super Submarines, in Bridgeport, Connecticut, USA. From there, the business took off very well.

Thinking about the future of the business, Fred decided that the quickest way to expand his business was to open franchises, and he would need to look for a franchisee. This franchisee was Brian Dixon, a friend who agreed to open the first franchised Subway restaurant in Wallingford, Connecticut. With that success, he aimed to open 32 stores in 10 years. In the meantime, Fred had picked up the basics of running a business, and also the significance of serving high quality product that is well made to their customers while providing good customer service, and to keep operating costs low and looking for strategic locations. This knowledge became the very foundation of every Subway restaurant everywhere else in the world.

The first franchise opened in an international location was in Bahrain in 1984, but as of today, there are over 35,000 Subway restaurants worldwide; making it the world's largest submarine sandwich chain, with Fred DeLuca still its president. Its mission is simple, which is to allow people to have quick, made-to-order delicious yet nutritious meals that can be enjoyed by the entire family. And of course, customers worldwide are served with fresh and delicious sandwiches for eating in or on the go.

Today, Subway is more than a store; it has helped out many non-profit organizations and charities, as well as schools and clubs, supporting communities wherever they are. Their addictive Subway cookies recipe are highly sought after, and their sandwiches an ideal meal to a healthy lifestyle.
