Most of us have learned to pronounce it and some of us writers have even learned to spell it. Hyundai has become not just a well-known name, but a well-driven brand in the United States and elsewhere in the world. The Korean auto maker has now become the fifth largest auto company on the planet, coming in behind Toyota, General Motors, Ford, and Volkswagen. Surprisingly, Hyundai ranks ahead of Honda and Nissan. Hyundai has had a headquarters in California since 1985 when the cars first appeared stateside. Factories in Alabama since (2005) and Georgia (up and running this year) make the vehicles here as well.

That bodes well for buyers in the United States who often prefer domestic products and love the fact that Hyundai is providing jobs for citizens while many companies are moving jobs overseas. Sales of Hyundai in the United States rose 17 percent through August of this year, with a total of 363,491 units sold. Sales of Kia, Hyundai's sister brand, were up 9.7 percent. It's really amazing to think that our domestically-owned auto manufacturers have needed bailouts and have closed numerous plants and cut jobs, while companies like Hyundai are thriving and growing. What does that say about their product and their business model? Maybe several things that the big three could learn from.

Patrick Hyundai Elantra customers should be impressed with the quality and safety ratings being earned by Hyundai models. Respected groups like J.D. Power & Associates and Consumer Reports have repeatedly named them in top pick lists.

Hyundai also is building a new headquarters in the U.S. which will double the size of the old one and double the employees to about 1,400. This little company is definitely kicking into high gear in the U.S. market and this can only benefit Patrick Hyundai Veracruz customers and buyers of other Hyundai models around the country.

The other impressive thing about Hyundai is how they have adapted their models to the U.S. market, increasing the size, versatility and purpose of many models and creating new ones, like the SUVs, that appeal to the market here. Hyundai is certainly trying to be an auto maker with American appeal, even if it's not really an American auto maker. Or is it? U.S. headquarters, domestic factories, outselling some domestic makers. Hmm....
