Relating to Dangers

• In Army training, standard operating procedure requires that all soldiers be informed of potentially dangerous chemicals in the workplace. Training involves learning how to recognize potential hazards and create and maintain a safer work area. Hazards must be identified and evaluated according to their threat level, and they must be labeled in accordance with Hazardous Communication Standards.
  
  

Understanding the Chemicals

• Training involves learning the different states of composition for potentially hazardous chemicals and how they are used on the job site. It is important to learn how liquids and solids become airborne. Training also involves learning how potentially harmful chemicals enter the body and what effect they have. Chemical characteristics such as boiling point, vapor pressure and pH are also taught.
  
  

Protecting Against Chemicals

• Every time a new chemical is introduced to the job site, soldiers must be retrained and taught about the potential hazards and how to protect themselves. This training involves learning the proper function and use of personal protective equipment. Training also involves learning to read the Material Safety Data Sheets, which describe safe-handling procedures, control measures, emergency response and exposure limits.
