Colorado State Law on Vehicle Registration Suspension
- The Colorado Department of Revenue and the Department of Health and the Environment are charged with identifying high-polluting vehicles. Colorado will suspend the registration of a high-polluting vehicle if the owner fails to bring it in for compliance testing or fails to have a vehicle fixed after it fails the compliance test. When a vehicle is not in compliance, an emissions hold will be placed on the vehicle's registration and the owner will not be able to renew the registration.
- The Department of Revenue may suspend the registration of a vehicle if it has been reported stolen. It will not register the vehicle until the vehicle has been returned to the owner.
- The Department of Revenue may cancel or refuse to register a vehicle when it receives notification from the state patrol that the owner has an outstanding civil fine. The owner can register the vehicle once the department receives notification of the payment of the fine.
