Dog Whistle Training Techniques

    Why Whistle Train

    • Dog whistles are a popular tool used by handlers on hunting and herding dogs alike. But these days the high pitched training tool is becoming more common among pet owners as well. If your dog likes to run the wide open spaces, then it's essential to have your pup disciplined enough to be obedient under all circumstances. Training whistles enable dog owners to communicate and direct their dogs even from a distance. If your dog is unable to see or hear you clearly, a dog whistle will aid in getting her attention and even delivering commands through various pips and blasts.

    Basic Commands

    • While there are many standard dog whistle commands, you are free to create your own variations. Just remember that you want to keep it simple and distinct to avoid confusion. Your dog should be able to easily distinguish the sound of one command versus another. Try to incorporate both the sound of the whistle and your own hand gestures to emphasize clarity. For example, the command to sit consists of one long whistle blast while raising an open palm in the air. To call your dog to you, release several whistle pips with your arms stretched out to the sides. Finally, to redirect your dog release two pips while motioning with one arm the desired direction you want him to go into.

    Getting Started

    • Because whistle training involves distant communication, it's important that your pooch has already mastered the commands within close proximity. After all, it's a lot easier to teach a dog to sit in while she's standing in front of you as opposed to 20 yards away.

Once you've mastered verbal commands, practice them using the whistle commands. Start these while you two are within close proximity. Once your dog has mastered the whistle commands in front of you then you can try implementing them from a distance. Remember to reward your dog when she responds successfully to the commands by giving her a treat and praising her accomplishment. Never punish her for responding to a command, even if she was doing something wrong to spur you to use it. If you reward her for being obedient, she will continue to be obedient. Punishment for obedience will send the wrong signal. Your dog should desire the reward for following commands over any other temptation if you want her to respond to the commands.
