How to Claim a Slab Leak to My Home Insurance
- 1). Call your homeowner's insurance agent or broker. If you purchased your homeowner's coverage directly from an insurance company, call the company directly and ask to speak to a claims agent.
- 2). Give the agent, broker or claims agent your policy number so he can locate your policy. The agent may want to verify information such as your name, property address and telephone number. He will then file the claim with the company on your behalf.
- 3). Take pictures of items sitting the slab if the leak causes water to run above the slab, then remove the items from the surface of the slab. Slab leaks do not always result in water on the surface of the concrete; however, if this does happen, you will need to remove the items to avoid additional damage. If you do not take steps to protect your belongings, repair or replacement of these items may not be covered under your homeowner's insurance policy.
- 4). Allow the company's adjuster to inspect the property. The adjuster will estimate the cost of the damage and determine whether the repair of the slab leak is covered under your policy. Provide the adjuster with the pictures you took of damaged items -- the adjuster can use these pictures to determine if your property damage will be covered.
