How to Identify a Lowchen
- 1). Make sure to look at the general appearance of the Löwchen. It is a big dog in a small body—it will even stand up to bigger dogs. The body is well-balanced and matched with a short muzzle and topskull. It has a cute gait and is very outgoing.
- 2). Make sure the size and proportion are correct. The Löwchen is generally 12 to 14 inches at the shoulders. A properly balanced dog has a slight rectangular shape to it. The bone structure, while strong, is not coarse.
- 3). Make sure the head shows the proper expression. The expression should be alert and lively. The eyes, set deeply into the skull, are dark, large and round. They are set far apart but remain forward. The ears, moderate in length, are heavily fringed. The muzzle is the same length as the backskull and, in some cases, may be a bit shorter. The somewhat broad muzzle leads to a dark-colored nose. The nose may be brown or black, depending on the color of the dog.
- 4). Look at the lengthy neck as it arches toward the shoulders. The head is proudly carried over strong shoulders that are laid back with smooth muscles. The heavily arched front feet point straight ahead and are supported by deep pads. The feet shouldn’t splay. The rear thighs, both upper and lower, are heavily muscled. The rear feet are smaller than the front feet but, like the front feet, are arched and have deep pads. The Löwchen carries its tail over its back.
- 5). Feel the natural coat. It is quite long and dense but soft. It should not be woolly or wiry but should have a slight wave. The coat is normally cut in a lion cut. The coat color and markings can be any color.
