How to Protect Groundwater From Pollutants

10
    • 1). Stop the use of pesticides and fertilizers. Buy organic produce when you visit the supermarket and opt for organic choices in the home garden.

    • 2). Stop littering. Litter contributes hugely to groundwater contamination when garbage such as cigarette butts, plastic bottles and bags, and paper are swept away by storm water. The litter decomposes and the resultant chemicals are carried to groundwater water supplies, causing groundwater contamination.

    • 3). Recycle whenever possible. When things such as oil, electronic waste and plastics end up in landfills, they contribute to toxic leachate that can then seep into groundwater supplies.

    • 4). Choose alternative transportation options. Driving a car releases pollutants into the air that eventually can seep into groundwater supplies and also drip toxic substances such as oil and antifreeze.

    • 5). Dispose of garden waste properly. When organic "natural" pollutants decompose, they leach excessive nutrients into water, which can then make their way into groundwater. The excessive nutrients can spur the growth of micro-organisms that then contaminate the groundwater.
