The Ups and Downs of Hip-Hop Music

11
In 1973, a Kingston Native, living in the Bronx New York best known as DJ Kool Herc, decided to spin some turn tables at his sister's after school hangouts. This is the day the changed the face of music. This was the day Hip Hop (also known as rap) music was born. What people may not know about this genre of music is that it started with the beats first. DJ's would scratch, beat mix or match, and beat juggle. This is how they created a base that eventually could be rapped over. Later came the emceeing. Once the beats and the lyrics were combined, rap music changed the world and music will never be the same again.

"Rappers Delight" by the Sugar Hill Gang is the first recorded rap song in 1979.

When you hear the words
"I said a hip hop,
Hippie to the hippie,
The hip, hip a hop, and you don't stop, a rock it
To the bang bang boogie, say, up jump the boogie,
To the rhythm of the boogie, the beat."
There isn't a person who likes or knows anything about rap music that doesn't know those lyrics and instantly reacts when they hear them.
Over the years, rap music continued to evolve, and in 1986, NWA, a group out of Compton, LA hit the scene and opened everyone's eyes and ears with their gangsta rap. NWA is known for their controversial lyrics especially towards the LAPD. NWA had songs called "F&ck the Police, Express Yourself, and of course the infamous "Straight out of Compton."

By the 1990's, it was very clear that rap music was going to be around for a long time. This was a decade that really bloomed in the rap era. The 90's introduced a lot of artist like Run DMC, Ice-T, Public Enemy, Dr. Dre, Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince, Vanilla Ice, The Beastie Boys, 2Pac, Notorious BIG, Nas, and Jay-Z just to name a few. I think the 90's was the best time for rap music. The variety was extraordinary.

In the early 2000's, rap music was still on the up and up. Jay-Z was killing the rap game. Eminem had made a name for himself as a white boy emcee. 50 cent told us to "Get Rich or Die Trying" and Kanye West released his first album "The College Dropout." However, by 2005, something went wrong and rap music made a big downward spiral. We got autotune from T-Pain. Gucci Mane, Trinidad James, and Souja Boy all hit the scene talking about absolutely nothing. These guys took the meaning out of good music in general. There was no message to what was being talked about.

That was one of the reasons why this genre of music was made. It was a way to express yourself. To rap about what is going on around you; the good, the bad and the ugly. Now, the only thing that is being expressed is Gold all in my chain, Popping Molly and Twerking. It's really sad how something so wonderful can come into our world and overtime we just mess it up. This is exactly what happened to a category of music that took the world by surprise; that is hip hop music.
