The Fonseca Brand of Cigars Is Produced by Two Companies
Don Francisco Fonseca did set up his facility for the production of cigars in Cuba in 1892 and can therefore be called the original creator of this brand. However, now this brand of cigars is being produced by two companies. One is the state-owned Cuban brand by Habanos SA, and the other is produced in the Dominican Republic for MATASA.
Apart from setting up a facility in Cuba the Don immigrated to the United States in 1903, and the brand was registered in 1907. A factory for the production of cigars was also set up in the United States. Don Fonseca regularly visited Cuba to supervise the production of these cigars which even to this day are produced by Habanos SA. Don Fonseca passed away in 1929, but the production of the Fonseca brand has continued with Habanos SA being the sole producer from Cuba.
Habanos SA is a popular brand name among cigar aficionados who believe that this company produces the best cigars in the world. This is a fact which cannot be disputed because the company has access to some of the best tobacco growing plantations in the country. Most of the brands produced by this company use varieties of tobacco leaves from the Vuelta Abajo region which is famous for its tobacco leaves. The same cannot be said about competitors located in other South American countries that are forced to use tobacco leaves from local plantations. Therefore, it can be said with a degree of certainty that a difference in the quality of the produce will definitely be seen by cigar enthusiasts.
The Fonseca brand did not face any difficulties in production even during the Cuban revolution when production went on uninterrupted. It is possible that they may have lost some of their expert cigar makers after the revolution, but no interruption was seen in the production at any time. People living in the United States can consider themselves unfortunate because they would not have the opportunity to purchase a Fonseca cigar but would have to depend upon the product manufactured in the Dominican Republic. Things would not be same for people in Spain or Canada where the brand manufactured by Habanos SA is available. This cigar is well presented and can catch the eye of even a first-time user. The mild taste it offers makes it a perfect choice for those who may not prefer the stronger and medium varieties. That the brand is produced by two separate entities should not deter people looking for the Fonseca in any way. They can definitely find the product manufactured by Habanos SA and satisfy their craving for a cigar.
