Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFROTC) programs provide the physical, mental and academic training necessary for college students to transition into a career as an Air Force officer. Students receiving a military scholarship must attend AFROTC classes and serve four years as an officer upon graduation. However, some students take the classes simply to explore the possibility of a military career or learn leadership skills that will serve them well in the civilian world. Since there is at least one detachment in each U.S. state, students have ample opportunity to try out the AFROTC. - The AFROTC unit at UW is designated as Detachment (Det.) 910. This unit is one of three located in the state of Washington and has the distinction of being the No. 1 large AFROTC Unit in the Nation for 2007. Det. 910 is particularly well known for its Honor Guard. This special unit within the AFROTC detachment is a performance team whose mission is to provide positive publicity for Det. 910 and the University of Washington. The Honor Guard is composed of three small teams: the color guard, the saber detail, and the drill team.

washington.edu - Det. 85 is based out of Berkeley but also has cross-town affiliate agreements with 30 area schools, including UC Davis, Cal State University East Bay and City College of San Francisco. The Berkeley AFROTC is a successful program that has turned out accomplished officers such as Teresa Mae Claiborne, the first African American Female Air Force Pilot. Det. 85 cadets who commit to four years of military service after graduation may apply for an AFROTC scholarship. The scholarship award covers the cost of tuition and books and also provides a monthly living allowance of $300 to $500.

berkeley.edu - The University of Kansas is home to Det. 280 of the AFROTC. Cadets at KU come from a variety of different majors, including Architectural Engineering, African Studies, Aerospace Engineering and Arabic Language Studies. After graduation they become second lieutenants and receive further training as pilots, engineers or intelligence officers. To enhance their training skills, Det. 280 cadets rotate through leadership positions in the cadet wing. For example, for one week, a cadet may work as the morale officer of the cadet wing and the next week she will develop the class exercises for the weekly AFROTC leadership lab.

ku.edu - Detachment 165 resides at the University of New Hampshire, an hour east of Concord. Det. 165's curriculum starts with a one-unit leadership lab that cadets must take every semester of their undergraduate careers. In the lab meetings, cadets practice leading other cadets in drill and marching situations as well as in tactical situations. In freshman year, cadets must also take the "Foundations of the Air Force" course where they learn the history of the military branch they will serve in the future. Sophomores take "Evolution of the U.S. Air Force and Space Power." Here cadets learn about the technical capabilities of the Air Force. As juniors, cadets receive more in-depth instruction about leading and motivating airmen in "Air Force Leadership Studies." Finally, during senior year, cadets study the Air Force's relationship to the rest of the U.S. government and the world at large when they take "National Security Affairs."
