Decorations for Baby Shower Cakes

11

    Baby Bootie Cake

    • A fresh new pair of baby shoes makes an adorable cake decoration. You can either go with the classic white leather baby shoes, or a sweet little pair of fashion shoes, to match the nursery theme or the shower theme. To protect the shoes and the cake, lay a paper doily on the cake before placing the shoes.

Seeing how teeny newborn feet are is often surprising for new parents and using infant shoes as a baby shower cake topper is one way to share that feeling with friends and family, in preparation for the arrival of a new baby.

    Best Wishes Cakes

    • Many people use the surface of the cake as a place to wish the new family well. You can say "Congratulations, Armstrong Family" or "Welcome Baby Marlo" or even "Good Luck, Heather."

For perfect cake lettering, pick up a spray bottle of frosting tint. It's a fast-drying food grade dye that works like spray paint. You can use stencils to create perfect lettering.

Top the cake with a very smooth layer of frosting, or a rolled fondant. Then, lay the stencil on the cake and spray with the dye. If the edges come out a little feathery, you can sharpen them up with a very thin line of black frosting, from a squeeze tube.

    Baby Bath Cake

    • A baby bath cake can be a challenge to make, but so much fun. This is a rather large cake, it begins with three 9" x 13" layer cakes.

Stack two of them together, with a custard, fruit or cream filling. Freeze the third layer, then cut the center away, leaving nothing but the outer 2 inches of the cake. Brush away the crumbs and place the frozen, hollowed out rectangular cake on top of the rest of the cake. This will be the bathtub.

Cover the entire cake with white butter cream frosting or fondant. In a plastic bag, toss a bag of mini marshmallows with an egg white and 1 drop of blue food coloring. This should give the marshmallows a glossy, bluish sheen.

Lay a naked, plastic 12 inch baby in the tub, then place the mini marshmallows in the bathtub with the baby, strategically covering the bikini area and filling the tub as much as possible. The baby's head should be resting on the side of the tub, like a pillow.

To decorate the tub, place a gum paste rubber duckie on the rim. If you don't have access to gum paste, just use a real one. You can use rolled fondant to make a bar of soap and a washcloth to lay on the edge of the tub. Use pink or blue frosting in a piping bag, with a grass tip to make a little bathroom rug on the serving tray, around the base of the tub.
