The NY Elite and MDMA Abuse

7
Ahhhh, the Elite.
It is a term that is bantered about freely in the media, online, and in conversation.
For the politically passionate, it is either the best group or the worst, depending on beliefs and world-views.
In actuality, the elite refers to a small group of people of advantage and power and influence.
According to recent reports a new MDMA drug called 'Molly' has become increasingly popular with the New York elite.
Perhaps Molly, is currently the drug of choice for this particular group because of its somewhat dubious regard as somehow being more respectable, or pure, or more natural than other recreational drugs.
A "soft drug", if you will, as opposed to a "hard drug".
But no matter what nicely catalogued and socially acceptable words you use to describe MDMA, it remains just what it is-an illegal and dangerous substance.
Molly is New to The Scene Originally patented by Merck pharmaceuticals in 1914, and used by pyschotherapists in the seventies to get their patients talking freely, it is not a new drug by any means, but perhaps just "new to the NY elite scene".
That such a uniformly well-educated and professional public, our up-and-coming entrepreneurs and Wall Street magnates, would diminish their physical and mental well-being with drug use, is a bitterly sad sign of our times.
That the hip-hop culture has embraced Molly, including it in lyrics of popular songs, only serves to further the artificial value and acceptance of its use.
Although Molly is sold as "pure" MDMA in a powder or crystalline form, it is still subject be being cut or laced with other dangerous or synthetic substances, unbeknownst to the user.
Users often consider it "safe" because it is "pure MDMA", but it tends to headed in the same direction of Ecstasy by nature of contamination and alteration.
And therein lies the increased risk of unknown added substances, adverse side-effects, and unpredicted and unexpected reactions.
The Facts on Drug Abuse No matter the social group, the motivation for taking drugs is common ground, shared by all who take them.
Drug use crosses all social barriers, and no social group is exempt from its consequences.
The fact remains that, somehow and in some way, drugs are a solution to a problem the individual is trying to solve.
Whether the problem is physical pain, emotional pain, or an unbearable sense of loss or alienation from others, it is too often drugs or alcohol a person turns to for relief.
Unfortunately, the drug does not solve the problem, and in fact, becomes the new problem.
With the ever-increasing pace of our society and all its rapid technical advances, people tend to be more hooked-up electronically via cell phones, Internet and social media than with real life people, sharing real life experiences together.
Despite the benefit of the technological advances, the downside is the alienation, the lack of face-to-face encounters, the lack of exchanging real and live communication with another, and a lack of our inherent sense of brotherhood and belonging.
It is here that MDMA finds it way into the lives of the NY Elite, and their generation.
Because the drug is known for imparting feelings of euphoria, warmth and diminished anxiety, it has gained a foothold with those who hunger for real human interaction and belonging.
Therein lies the trap, as there is no substitute, chemical or otherwise, which supplants actually being a vital part of life and sharing it with your fellows, face-to-face.
