Neutral Setting

18

Definition:

In friendship, a neutral setting is one that has no emotional ties for either person. This type of place is generally private, or at the very least in a location where both parties will feel free to discuss things openly. Coffee shops or other heavily traveled locations are generally not a good place to have a frank discussion, because there are simply too many people going in and out.

The ideal neutral setting would allow for a long conversation without people overhearing. Time is also an issue when having a heart-to-heart discussion. Friends should choose the right time and place to air their feelings. Choosing the wrong place to have an argument will only make things worse. If you know that a friendship breakup is eminent, choose a neutral setting to talk things out with a friend.

Examples: "I wanted to talk to Josh about his behavior, but we were at my cousin's wedding and it wasn't the right place. I asked him to meet me at John's house instead because it's a neutral setting and we'll have an easier time getting everything on the table that way."
