How to Apply for Medicaid in Southern Georgia
- 1). Obtain a Medicaid application from the Georgia Division of Family and Children Services (DFCS) website or from a Region 11, or Southern Georgia, county DFCS office. You may also request that your county DFCS office mail a Medicaid application to your home. If you are unsure of your county DFCS office's location, visit the DFCS Region 11 page to find your county office and contact information.
- 2). Complete the application, including the names of all members of your household in need of Medicaid. Identify any pregnant members of your household, including yourself and list the respective due dates. Indicate if anyone in the household has outstanding medical bills or a current health insurance policy. Use recent pay stubs, unemployment insurance, Social Security or disability benefits as proof of your household's income. Use bank statements, award letters such as student financial aid and vehicle titles to prove your household's resources. Include any additional pertinent information and sign the form.
- 3). Return the Medicaid application to your county DFCS office in person, by mail or by fax. Mailing the form could delay processing time of your application.
- 4). The DFCS registers and processes your application to determine your eligibility to receive Medicaid. The DFCS will compare your gross income and resources to Medicaid income and resource limits, which may take time depending on the type of assistance that you require. Allow up to 10 days for a response from the receipt date of the application if you are pregnant or applying for a newborn. All other applicants must wait up to 45 days, or 60 days if disabled, says the Georgia Department of Human Services.
