How To Relieve Stress And Anxiety Through Healthy Eating
Stress is a condition we live with every day.
From project deadlines at work to homework assignments at school our bodies are constantly exposed to different types of stress.
Too much unrelieved stress will hurt you in ways you can not imagine.
From strokes and heart attacks all the way down to unhealthy eating habits.
I know this from personal experience.
At one time if stress got too much I went to my old friends Ben and Jerry and after a while I had extra weight to add to my stress.
Then I learned that healthy eating can actually help you reduce stress and I want to share these tips on how to relieve stress and anxiety just through eating healthier.
1: Avoid Excessive Caffeine I know a cup in the morning gets you going, but too much coffee or soda adds an extra strain on the body by increasing blood pressure and blood sugar levels.
I am sure we have all felt the jitters from drinking too much coffee and I read the ingredients on a soda can yesterday and found out most soda is mainly carbonated water and high fructose corn syrup with caffeine.
Try unsweetened green tea instead.
This way you can sweeten to taste.
Sugar in the raw and the Stivia products are unprocessed natural alternatives to processed sugar.
Green Tea has high amounts of antioxidants and a nutritionist told me that the "natural" caffeine in Green Tea is healthier for you than caffeine from other sources.
2: Carry your own Healthy Snacks Under the gun and need a boost go grab a candy bar! Wait that's not the way.
Empty calories and a sugar high followed by a sugar crash is not the way to go.
Try this instead, make your own trail mix.
I use 2 part nuts (cashews, almonds, peanuts-unsalted or salted your choice) 1 part raisins and one part M&M's.
The protein from the nuts digests slower making me feel full longer while the raisins and M&M's provide flavor and a little kick.
Always snack in moderation.
Carrots, celery and sunflower seeds are also healthy alternatives.
3: Eat a Healthy Breakfast and Carry your Lunch.
Never leave in the morning on an empty stomach.
You will probably overeat on unhealthy food later on.
Breakfast helps maintain your blood sugar levels throughout the day while carrying your lunch allows you to control what kind of healthy foods you want to eat instead of grabbing something unhealthy because its faster.
4: High Fiber Fruits and Veggies are our Friends Boldly colored fruits and vegetables contain high sources of antioxidants, minerals, and fiber which help to fight disease and reduce bad cholesterol levels which can cause strokes and heart disease.
5: Water and Plenty of It Eight to Ten glasses a day is the average.
Another way is to take half your body weight and put ounces behind it instead of pounds.
For example a 200 lb man needs to drink about 100 ounces of water a day.
This works out to about a half to a gallon of fluids a day.
Skim Milk and fruit juice are other alternatives.
Staying hydrated helps the body flush toxins from your system to keep you healthy.
Dehydration causes lethargy, headaches and an annoying thirst which can be very distracting thereby adding to your stress.
6: Exercise Just a brisk walk around the block after dinner can do wonders to relieve stress.
When combined together these tips can help you relieve stress and anxiety thereby giving you the extra push you need to get you through your day.
