How to Know If Your Immigration Lawyer Is Certified By the Texas Board
- 1). Visit the State Bar of Texas website. In addition to serving attorneys, the State Bar of Texas also assists the public in finding reputable attorneys. Go to the State Bar of Texas website (texasbar.com) and click on the "for the public" link.
- 2). Access the attorney directory. After clicking the "for the public" link, you will be directed to a page with a variety of services the State Bar of Texas offers to the public. Click on the "online attorney search" link that takes you to the "find a lawyer" page.
- 3). Search attorney credentials. On the "find a lawyer" page, scroll down to the "search by education, certifications, and services" section. The first area is "TBLS Certification" which includes certification listings in all legal areas. Click on the bottom arrow on this box and scroll down until you reach "immigration and nationality law." Highlight this category and click the "submit" box at the bottom of the page. The search results for immigration and nationality law attorneys will appear.
- 4). Research your immigration lawyer. Scroll through the search results and find your immigration lawyer. A green dot next to his name indicates he is eligible to practice. A red dot means he is not eligible. Yellow means inactive and blue represents deceased. If your attorney is not listed at all in this directory, he may not be certified to practice immigration law in Texas. If you do find his listing, click the link to view his profile.
- 5). Contact the State Bar of Texas by phone if you still have questions about your immigration lawyer after visiting the website.
