Keeping Your Kids
Nothing is more distressing to me to see parents and children squabbling over everything.
What has happened there that has caused this? I remember reading in the Bible one time this verse, raise your child in the way they should go and they shall not depart from it.
Let's figure out what this means and how it will help us out.
Think about that phrase for just one moment.
Raise a child in the way they should go and they will not depart from it.
It actually makes pretty good sense.
If you teach your child a way to do things over and over again, then when they grow up, they will mimic your actions.
But how does this relate to the 'generation gap' felt between children and parents? If you are finding that you are constantly in conflict with your children, it won't take long for your kids to figure out that this is the way to handle adversity between two people.
Before long, they will be fighting back.
Because you taught them how.
My wife and I are constantly course correcting with our kids.
We are far from perfect when it comes to parenting, but subtle course corrects each day permits us to correct poor attitudes in us first and our kids second.
For example, I found that I was blowing up at my eldest son quite a bit.
By the time he reached the age of about 14, he became very explosive in temperament.
I initially was quite annoyed and upset 'with my son'.
I needed to look at my own attitudes to see where he had learnt this explosive behavior.
What's the old saying, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree! I was soon in a strong course correction with my own behavior.
Initially nobody could figure out my 'angle' so to speak.
But soon they saw that I was trying very hard to be genuine and find a better way to deal with strife then anger.
In this particular issue, I'm pleased to say that both my son and I have been able to course correct simply by my attitude change.
Soon my son watched how I responded to potentially argumentative situations and learnt the new way that I was handling these same situations.
I'm pleased to say that he's almost 17 now and his attitude is much better! Why? My attitude is much better! If you are having troubles with your kids when they are five or fifty-five, check your heart.
Make sure that you are handling a situation in the correct fashion.
Once you correct this in your life, only then can your kids see this and start their course correction.
Just remember the bible verse, 'raise a child up in the way they should go and they will not depart from it'.
