Pistol Rust Removal

16

    Prepare the Pistol

    • Work on the pistol in an area that provides enough light to easily see areas of corrosion and rust. Rust often takes on a powder-like appearance in the initial stages and might be difficult to detect without good lighting. The surface should be at a comfortable height. Make sure the work area has good ventilation and is away from open flames or sources of heat. Place the pistol on an old towel or pad and wipe it down with a dry cloth to completely remove any moisture or excess oils.

    Remove Light Rust

    • Pour a small amount of bore solvent onto a cleaning cloth. Rub the corroded area with the solvent working, in small areas with a circular motion. Apply gentle pressure and work the solvent thoroughly around the rusted area. Check the cloth for rust and repeat with more solvent if needed. Wipe the area dry with a clean cloth and examine the pistol to determine if the solvent removed the corrosion. If not, apply a small amount of metal polish to a cloth or use metal polish wadding. Rub the rusted area using a gentle forward and back motion rather than up and down, side to side or circular. Examine the pad for signs of rust removal and repeat the process if needed. Wipe the polished area with solvent, and examine the pistol finish.

    Remove Heavier Rust Spots

    • Use a small piece of 0000 steel wool and a liberal amount of good quality gun oil for heavier rust spots. Apply the oil to the pistol with a cloth, making sure to coat the rusted area thoroughly. Gently rub the area with the 0000 steel wool. Do not rub the steel wool on any area of the pistol without oil. Wipe using a forward and back motion; do not use a circular or swirling motion. Wipe away excess oil using solvent to examine the area and determine if the steel wool removed the rust. Repeat the process if necessary. When the rust is completely removed, wipe down the area with solvent, then apply a thin coating of gun oil to the entire surface of the pistol as a protective barrier.
