Fiza Diner in Floral Park, Queens, is no diner. It's a delicious, no-frills, takeout joint for Pakistani food. Come for tandoori chicken, chicken keema, goat curry, vegetable curries, kebabs, and naan bread to go. The dishes ladled from the steam table might be warmed in a microwave, but their flavors aren't diminished. The sign says the best kebabs in America: you'll have to try them yourself to know for sure.

Ask what's available today, and you'll get a rundown of the items on display: a good 8 or 9 dishes -- meat and vegetarian curries, plus a few items from the grill and tandoor. Not all the dishes will be anything beyond standard, but almost always there's one that just makes the plate sing. I recommend picking a few items for a sample plate for $10, which is big enough to feed two (or one huge appetite).

Note that the spicing is not toned down, but caters to South Asians in the local neighborhood. The servers are always accommodating, explaining dishes and happy to recommend something.
